Garden Reach Shipbuilders, IRS sign MoU for development of green energy and autonomous vessels

The strategic partnership aims to revolutionize the maritime industry by focusing on the development of Green Energy and Autonomous Vessels.

Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd. (GRSE) and the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) have solidified their commitment to innovation, technology, and sustainability with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on March 2, 2024.

The strategic partnership aims to revolutionize the maritime industry by focusing on the development of Green Energy and Autonomous Vessels. Under the MoU, both entities will collaborate to pursue and execute contracts for the development of autonomous and green energy vessels, combining GRSE’s shipbuilding expertise with IRS’s classification capabilities. This collaboration underscores a shared commitment to driving innovation and excellence in vessel design and development while ensuring compliance with safety standards and regulatory requirements.

GRSE has already made strides in the Green Energy segment with the launch of a Next Generation Electric Ferry for the Government of West Bengal. Additionally, GRSE has developed an Unmanned Surface Vessel (USV) named ‘Swadheen’ for autonomous surveys and an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) named ‘Neerakshi’ for various missions.

The signing of the MoU represents a significant milestone in fostering innovation and sustainability in the maritime industry, positioning GRSE and IRS as leaders in India’s quest for a greener and technologically advanced maritime future.
