The Tata Power Company Limited (Tata Power) and Druk Green Power Corporation Limited (DGPC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Thimphu to establish a comprehensive skill development ecosystem aimed at supporting Bhutan’s growing clean energy sector.

The partnership seeks to create a future-ready workforce capable of meeting both immediate and long-term requirements for clean energy projects being jointly developed by Tata Power and DGPC. The MoU signing ceremony was attended by Bhutan Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay.

The agreement was formally signed by Dr Praveer Sinha, CEO & Managing Director of Tata Power, and Dasho Chhewang Rinzin, Managing Director of DGPC. Senior officials from both organisations, including Ms Anjali Pandey, President – Generation, Tata Power, were also present during the event.

Under the partnership, training programmes will be conducted through Tata Power Skill Development Institute (TPSDI), which specialises in power sector training and certification. TPSDI will provide technical expertise, training infrastructure, course material, and accreditation support for the implementation of the programmes.

Speaking on the development, Dr Praveer Sinha said the collaboration reflects a shared vision to build a strong talent ecosystem for Bhutan’s clean energy future. He added that TPSDI’s expertise would help develop industry-ready professionals with skills in safe operations, emerging technologies, and operations & maintenance.

DGPC, on the other hand, will facilitate mobilisation and deployment of trainees while also securing necessary approvals from the Government of Bhutan and related authorities. Tata Power will obtain the required approvals from the Government of India.

The skill development initiative will be rolled out in three phases. The first phase will focus on safety training and mandatory safety induction programmes for workers before entering project sites. The second phase will expand into technical skill development related to construction, material handling, and earth-moving equipment operations. The final phase will focus on specialised training for long-term operation and maintenance of clean energy assets.

TPSDI was established to bridge skill gaps in the power sector through industry-focused training and certification programmes. The institute is accredited by the National Safety Council of India and is also recognised by the National Skill Development Corporation and the National Council for Vocational Education and Training. It offers practical training across thermal, hydel, solar, wind, and green hydrogen technologies through its nationwide network of training centres.
