Amul Dairy Director rejoins Congress 5 months after leaving BJP

He rejoined his former party with his supporters in the presence of Congress state president Shaktisinh Gohil at a function in the party’s headquarters Rajiv Bhavan.

On July 18, a cooperative executive and director of the oldest dairy union in the nation, Kaira District Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union, better known by its brand name Amul Dairy, joined the Congress.

Juvansinh Chauhan, a two-term Amul director, had worked for the Congress for almost 20 years until switching to the BJP in February of this year, just before the dairy’s president was to be elected. At a gathering in the party’s Rajiv Bhavan headquarters, he re-joined his previous party alongside his followers in the presence of Congress state president Shaktisinh Gohil.

Gohil claimed that Chauhan was dissatisfied with the BJP’s (the country’s ruling party) escalating political meddling in the dairy union. The Amul cooperative model is something Gujarat is proud of.

Its growth and management were assisted by the then-Congress government, which helped it become a major cooperative globally. Gohil told reporters that Chauhan decided to join us with his team due to rising political involvement.

There are 13 elected directors for Amul, the bulk of them are currently affiliated with the BJP, which took over the union in February of this year after Vipul Patel, a candidate sponsored by it, was elected chairman. One of the four directors from the Congress who switched over to the BJP before the election was Chauhan.
