Amazon will invest an additional $15 billion in India: CEO Andy Jassy

By the end of 2030, Amazon’s cloud computing division, Amazon Web Services (AWS), plans to invest Rs. 1.06 trillion in the nation.

The company’s CEO, Andy Jassy, met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday and said that Amazon.com will make an extra $15 billion (approximately Rs. 12,297 crore) in India. By 2030, he said, the e-commerce behemoth will have invested a total of $26 billion (or around Rs. 21,314 crore) in India across all of its companies.

According to an Amazon blog post, Modi and Jassy discussed empowering people and small companies to compete worldwide, facilitating exports, promoting Indian entrepreneurs, and generating jobs. They also discussed digitalization. This statement comes after Amazon Web Services (AWS), a division of Amazon that specialises in cloud computing, said last month that it will spend $12.9 billion in the nation by the year 2030.

Separately, Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced to reporters in a video published on Twitter by Reuters partner ANI business that the firm will establish a worldwide financial operation centre in Gujarat, India’s westernmost state, in GIFT City.

“We shared Google is investing $10 billion (roughly Rs. 81,980 crore) in the India digitization fund, and we are continuing to invest through that,” Pichai stated.

A Reuters request for comment on more information on the new centre was made outside of work hours, but Google did not react right away.

On the last day of his visit to Washington, Modi met with US and Indian technology leaders, including Tim Cook of Apple, Sundar Pichai of Google, and Satya Nadella of Microsoft, and he urged multinational corporations to “Make in India.”

Additionally, Amazon recently announced that it will make it simple for Indian consumers to swap their Rs. 2,000 notes during cash-on-delivery shopping by allowing them to top up their Amazon Pay accounts. According to Amazon, customers may deposit cash up to Rs. 50,000 every month, including notes with a Rs. 2,000 denomination.
