According to the Russian Defence Ministry, a bulker transporting Western-supplied projectiles and ammunition to Kiev was also hit during the operation.
The ministry asserted that Russian airstrikes targeted Ukrainian manpower and weaponry, aiming to thwart potential counterattacks from Ukrainian mechanised and assault brigades.
Ukrainian units were reportedly repelled from key areas including Lyubimovka, Malaya Loknya, and Olgovka.
Authorities claimed the suspect had been instructed by his handlers to assemble an improvised explosive device (IED) intended to target a defence executive in the Sverdlovsk region, an important hub for Russia’s defence manufacturing.
The incident led to a temporary halt of traffic on the nearby Crimean Bridge, which shares the Kerch Strait with the Kavkaz port.
This issue is scheduled for discussion at upcoming bilateral meetings of EU foreign and defense ministers in Brussels on August 29 and 30.
