France supports Moroccan autonomy plan for western Sahara

France’s backing comes amidst ongoing international debate over the status of Western Sahara, a territory claimed by both Morocco and the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR).

France has publicly endorsed Morocco’s proposed autonomy plan for Western Sahara, marking a notable shift in international support for the longstanding territorial dispute. The endorsement, announced on 30/07/2024, aligns France with Morocco’s position on the contentious issue and could have substantial implications for regional diplomacy.

France’s backing comes amidst ongoing international debate over the status of Western Sahara, a territory claimed by both Morocco and the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR). The conflict dates back to 1975, when Spain withdrew from the region, leading to a protracted struggle between Moroccan forces and the Polisario Front, which seeks independence for Western Sahara.

Morocco’s autonomy plan proposes granting substantial self-governance to Western Sahara while keeping it under Moroccan sovereignty. The plan includes provisions for local administrative control and economic development, aiming to address the aspirations of the Sahrawi people while maintaining Morocco’s territorial integrity.

French Foreign Minister expressed support for the plan, stating, “France believes that Morocco’s autonomy proposal offers a realistic and pragmatic solution to the Western Sahara issue. It represents a significant step toward achieving a long-term and sustainable resolution.”

The endorsement from France, a key European Union member and a prominent international actor, is seen as a boost to Morocco’s diplomatic efforts. It reinforces Morocco’s stance in negotiations and may influence other countries and organizations to reconsider their positions on the Western Sahara dispute.
