Mira Nair, who directed A Suitable Boy earlier this year, is healing from an unfortunate surgery. During an interview with SpotboyE, she spoke about her fall, grief, and an upcoming project she’s excited about. When asked about her fall, the director was quoted saying, “I had a very painful shoulder surgery after a fall in the park. I am nursing myself back to sturdiness slowly and steadily.” We hope for her speedy recovery.
Besides the surgery, Mira is also healing emotionally. This year has been particularly hard on her as she lost two of her dearest friends and colleagues, Irrfan Khan and Nikita Pearl Waliga, who died of a brain tumor on 15th February. Mira said that she uses “thinking, processing, ruminating, writing” as a form of reflecting on the unfortunate demises.
Mira further spoke about a stage adaptation for Monsoon Wedding, a project she’s been working on for over eight years. “It was eight years of my life. It took us a long time to get here. We didn’t just take Broadway veterans and put them on stage. We dealt with the stage adaptation of Monsoon Wedding organically. We got authentic talent like Vishal Bhardwaj. We had 21 songs in the stage adaptation. The entire story of Monsoon Wedding on stage was impelled by music. We had really creative talent of the highest order,” she said.
