Alkem Laboratories Ltd. has introduced the DSS probiotic range in India, bringing the globally acclaimed De Simone formulation to the domestic market for the first time. This launch marks a significant step in India’s gut-health segment, as the De Simone formulation has long been considered one of the most clinically validated probiotic blends in the world.

Originally developed by Prof. Claudio De Simone, the formulation is built on a unique combination of eight bacterial strains, each selected for its biochemical properties and its ability to work synergistically inside the gastrointestinal system. Over the past two decades, this blend has been studied extensively in more than eighty clinical trials and has been featured in over two hundred scientific publications. Leading gastroenterology associations across the US and Europe also recommend it in their guidelines for managing various gastrointestinal disorders.

Alkem has in-licensed the product from Next Gen Pharma India Pvt. Ltd. and is introducing four strengths of the DSS range: a 225 billion CFU sachet, capsules with 112.5 billion CFU, 45 billion CFU, and 10 billion CFU respectively. With this portfolio, Alkem becomes the first company in India to offer all four strengths, including the country’s first-ever 225 billion CFU and 10 billion CFU probiotic variants. These options are designed to give healthcare professionals the flexibility to tailor treatment according to the severity of gut dysbiosis and individual patient needs.

The probiotic blend itself contains a mix of Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium and Streptococcus strains, all freeze-dried and stabilized to ensure viability and effectiveness. By helping restore microbial balance in the gut, the DSS formulation supports digestive health, reduces inflammation and assists the body in recovering from microbiota disruptions.

Clinically, DSS is recommended for a wide range of conditions. These include Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Ulcerative Colitis, Pouchitis, Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, Hepatic Encephalopathy, Cirrhosis, Bacterial Vaginosis and Antibiotic-Associated Diarrhea. It is also used for managing general gut dysbiosis and is considered safe for supplementation during pregnancy and lactation.
