A moment of brilliance — followed by concern — unfolded during the third ODI between India and Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) when Shreyas Iyer pulled off a spectacular catch to dismiss Alex Carey, but appeared to injure himself in the process.

The dismissal came off Harshit Rana’s bowling, who struck in the 27th over to break a steady partnership. Bowling at 134.1 kmph, Rana delivered a short-of-length ball outside off, tempting Carey to play a cut shot. The Australian wicketkeeper-batter mistimed it completely, slicing the ball high into the air.

Shreyas Iyer, positioned at backward point, turned around and sprinted backward with his eyes on the ball. In a remarkable display of athleticism, he managed to complete the catch over his shoulder while tumbling to the ground — a moment that drew applause from both Indian teammates and the SCG crowd.

However, the celebration quickly turned to worry as Iyer stayed down clutching his shoulder, prompting immediate attention from the Indian medical staff. He eventually walked off the field gingerly, with visible discomfort.

At the time of Carey’s dismissal — 24 off 37 balls (1 four) — Australia were around 150/4, having lost wickets at regular intervals after a strong start. The catch not only ended a key stand but also showcased Iyer’s commitment in the field, albeit at a painful cost.
