A moment of chaos unfolded during the third ODI between India and Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) when Matthew Short narrowly escaped a run-out after a mix-up with his partner.
The incident took place during Mohammed Siraj’s over, when a full delivery at 134.4 kph was driven by Short towards short cover. A slight misfield allowed the batters to attempt a quick single. However, confusion in communication led to hesitation between the wickets.
Shubman Gill, sprinting in from mid-off, collected the ball cleanly and had all three stumps to aim at, but his throw missed by inches — sparing Short, who had to dive back into the crease.
Adding to the concern, Short appeared to have hurt the same finger he injured in the previous match while diving to complete the run. Fortunately, after brief attention, he was able to continue batting.
The missed chance proved costly as Australia continued to build momentum in the powerplay, with the openers looking settled before Siraj dismissed Travis Head shortly after.
