Tesla has officially entered the Indian market with the launch of its popular electric SUV, the Model Y, and the opening of its first retail showroom in Mumbai. According to the company’s website, prices for the Model Y in India start at ₹59.89 lakh (on-road), with deliveries expected to begin soon.

The US EV giant is offering two variants to Indian buyers: the Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD), priced at approximately ₹60 lakh, and the Model Y Long Range RWD, priced at around ₹68 lakh. These prices are for outright cash purchases, as Tesla has not announced any leasing or financing options yet.

Compared to global markets, Tesla’s India pricing carries a significant premium. The Model Y starts at $44,990 in the United States, 263,500 yuan in China, and €45,970 in Germany. This difference is largely due to India’s steep import duties and logistics costs. Reports indicate that the initial batch of five Model Y units has already arrived in Mumbai from Tesla’s Shanghai facility, attracting import duties exceeding ₹21 lakh per unit under India’s 70% tariff on fully-built imports priced below $40,000.

The Mumbai showroom, Tesla’s first official retail presence in the country, was inaugurated on Tuesday morning at 10 am, marking a significant milestone for the company nearly two years after Elon Musk expressed serious interest in the Indian electric vehicle market.
