Rohit Sharma may have walked away from Test and T20I cricket, but his eyes remain firmly set on one last shot at World Cup glory. In a recent YouTube talk show with journalist Vimal Kumar, the Indian captain revealed that he still harbours strong ambitions to play and win the 2027 ODI World Cup, calling it “unfinished business” after India’s heartbreaking loss to Australia in the 2023 final.

Zehn mein bilkul hai, 2027 bilkul khelna chahta hoon (It’s definitely on my mind, I definitely want to play in 2027),” Rohit said, confirming that he is not done with international cricket just yet.

The 2023 ODI World Cup, held in India, ended in bitter disappointment for the hosts as they were defeated by Australia in the final. That loss, Rohit admits, still lingers. “I still have it in my mind to win the 2027 World Cup,” he told Vimal, reiterating his desire to chase what he believes was taken away too soon.

This statement comes just days after Rohit announced his retirement from Test cricket, following his earlier exit from the T20 format after leading India to the T20 World Cup 2024 title. With only ODIs remaining in his international career, Rohit now seems to be planning his final chapter around the 2027 World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.

Rohit retires from Tests with 4301 runs in 67 matches at an average of 40.57, including 12 centuries and a highest score of 212. His departure from red-ball cricket also means India will soon need to name a new Test captain ahead of the five-match Test series against England starting June 20 at Headingley.
