As India and New Zealand gear up for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 final on March 9 at the Dubai International Stadium, memories of their last title clash in the tournament—then called the ICC KnockOut Trophy 2000—resurface. The historic final, played in Nairobi, saw New Zealand clinch their maiden ICC title, after they successfully chased down the total against the Indian bowling line-up.

Ganguly’s century le India to 264

Batting first after losing the toss, India posted 264/6, anchored by a magnificent knock from captain Sourav Ganguly. The left-hander smashed 117 off 130 balls, an innings still remembered for its resilience. Ganguly remains the only Indian batter to score a century in an ICC final. Sachin Tendulkar also made a crucial 69, but after his dismissal, India lost momentum. The middle order failed to capitalize, preventing them from reaching a more imposing total.

Chris Cairns’ heroics sealed New Zealand’s triumph

Chasing 265 for victory, New Zealand found themselves in a tight spot. However, Chris Cairns produced one of the greatest knocks in tournament history, remaining unbeaten on 102, guiding the Kiwis to victory with just two balls to spare. His composed and calculated innings earned him the Player of the Match award. Chris Harris (46) provided solid support, ensuring New Zealand stayed in the hunt.

Despite a disciplined bowling effort, India failed to defend the total. Venkatesh Prasad was the standout performer, taking 3 wickets for just 27 runs in his 7-over spell, but the lack of support from other bowlers cost India the title.

As India and New Zealand prepare to face each other in the Champions Trophy 2025 crown, history adds an extra layer of intrigue to the rivalry between the two sides. Will India avenge their 2000 heartbreak, or will the Black Caps once again reign supreme? That we will know on Sunday.
