INS Viraat made its Final Journey from the Mumbai Naval Dockyard.
The majestic ship was a former British Royal Navi ship that was commissioned in the Indian Navy 12 May 1987, over 30 years back.
INS Virat was an aircraft carrier of the centaur-class. The ship was decommissioned in March 2017.
In its 30 years of service, the ship was operated by for squadrons, INAS 300 – White Tigers, INAS 552 – The Braves, INAS 321 – Angels and INAS 330 – Harpoons.
Alang, Gujrat has the biggest ship breaking yard and the bid for dismantling INS Viraat has been won by the Alang-based Shree Ram Group.
Many Navy veterans express their grief at the decision to dismantle Viraat. People have also criticized the inability of successive Government’s to preserve such an integral part of the history of the Indian Navi.
