The Election Commission of India (ECI) is set to announce the schedule for upcoming assembly elections today at 3 PM. A press conference will be held in New Delhi’s Vigyan Bhawan, but the states where the elections will be held have not been specified in the invitation.

States Likely to Go to Polls:

  • Haryana: The term of the legislative assembly ends on November 3.
  • Maharashtra: The term ends on November 26.
  • Jharkhand: The term ends in January 2025.

Jammu and Kashmir Elections:

  • The poll body may also announce elections in the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
  • Elections could be held before September 30, as mandated by the Supreme Court.
  • Jammu and Kashmir’s last assembly election was in 2014. The region has not seen elections since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019 and its bifurcation into two Union territories.

ECI’s Commitment:

  • Recently, the chief election commissioner Rajiv Kumar visited Jammu and Kashmir to review poll preparations.
