PlayStation has finally admitted that its PlayStation Stars rewards program has been offline for almost a month, but they’ve only shared a brief message saying it will be back soon.
What is PlayStation Stars and what is the issue?
PlayStation Stars is a loyalty program where players can earn rewards and digital collectibles by buying games and completing campaigns via the mobile PS App. Players earn points that can be used to get more collectibles, wallet funds, games, and add-ons. They can display these collectibles on their profile.
The Issue: In June, users began reporting that they couldn’t access the PlayStation Stars service and therefore couldn’t earn or redeem points. Many discussed the issue on Reddit, sharing different responses they received from support agents about whether they would get points after the outage.
Fortunately, according to an FAQ on the PlayStation website, players will still earn points for purchases made during the downtime. However, certain campaigns, like Days of Play, will not be accessible.
Current Status: When members visit the Stars page, they see a message stating: “PlayStation Stars will be returning soon in phased regional rollouts. Thank you for your patience and we look forward to welcoming you back.” Forbes reports that Asia will be the first region to have the service restored, followed by Europe and the Americas.
Since early June, the only message users have seen is “PlayStation Stars is not available at this time.” Sony hasn’t provided any details on what caused the outage.
According to PlayStation Lifestyle, this is the longest PlayStation outage since 2011, when PSN was down after a major hack exposed personal information of millions of users. Unlike the 2011 incident, PlayStation has barely acknowledged the Stars issue until now.
