A 17-year-old teenager detained for allegedly causing a fatal accident while driving a Porsche on May 19 has confessed to Pune Police that he was intoxicated at the time of the incident, as per India Today reports.
Adding to the complexity of the case, the teenager’s mother was arrested on June 1 after investigations revealed that the boy’s blood sample had been swapped with hers. The involvement of a well-known builder’s son in the accident has heightened scrutiny on both medical and police procedures.
According to India Today, the teenager expressed difficulty in recalling the sequence of events clearly to the police.
In a significant development, a Pune court has remanded the teenager’s parents in police custody until June 5 on charges of evidence tampering. Allegations suggest that they orchestrated the manipulation of the blood sample.
The tragic incident occurred on May 19 when the teenager collided with two IT workers riding a motorbike in Pune’s Kalyani Nagar area. Subsequent outrage was fueled by CCTV footage showing the underage driver and his friends consuming alcohol at a pub before the accident.
Reports surfaced that doctors at Sassoon General Hospital, where the teenager underwent a check-up, had replaced his blood sample with his mother’s. Allegedly, the teenager’s father bribed the doctors for a favorable report.
In connection with this, two Sassoon General Hospital doctors and a peon acting as an intermediary between the family and physicians have also been apprehended.
The parents allegedly visited a state-run hospital, manipulated the blood samples, and conspired to destroy evidence.
The case has generated three police reports: one for the accident, another against the bar for serving alcohol to a minor, and a third filed by the family driver, who claimed he was coerced by the family to assume responsibility for the accident.
Adding to the legal entanglements, the teenager’s grandfather has also been detained in connection with the case.
