The United States might consider banning the use of connected-car technology in Chinese vehicles on its roads. In the most serious cases, the government may completely ban the use of such technology. The main concern behind a potential decision of this kind is the possibility that Chinese cars equipped with connected car technology might be a major security risk.

US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo highlighted the Joe Biden administration’s serious intentions to investigate the possibility of Chinese-connected cars on American roads posing a security danger. She also stated to reporters that such cars should be banned from sale and use in the country.

“We have to digest all the data and then figure out what action that we want to take,” she said to Reuters. She added, “We could take extreme action, which is to say no Chinese connected vehicles in the United States or look for mitigation.”

BYD and Nio, two of the biggest Chinese EV players, are not now available in the US market. Models that could be affected include Geely-owned Volvo’s EX30, which is set to go on sale here later this year.
