According to a NATO statement from January, it was mentioned that approximately 90,000 troops from all 31 member states plus Sweden would be participating in the exercise. The statement indicated that the exercise is poised to test and refine NATO’s defence plans for reinforcing European defences against a near-peer adversary.
Commodore Blackmore’s comments reflected those of the organization, which stated that Steadfast Defender 2024 signifies a pivotal moment for NATO, illustrating transatlantic unity, strength, and resolve in response to evolving security challenges.
The exercise occurs against the backdrop of a dispute concerning NATO defence spending commitments, prompted by former U.S. President Donald Trump’s criticism that he “would encourage (Russia) to do whatever they want” regarding allies who underspend.
