Chennai Super Kings made waves at the IPL 2024 auction in Dubai as they secured Sameer Rizvi, a talented right-handed explosive batsman hailing from Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, for a substantial bid of Rs 8.40 crore. Known for his prowess as a pinch-hitter, Sameer has left an indelible mark in domestic tournaments, topping the six-hitting charts for Kanpur Superstars in the UP T20 League and representing India B in Under-19 cricket.
Hailing from the cricket-rich soil of Meerut, the city that also produced the likes of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Sameer aims to showcase his talent on the grand stage. Despite his family’s roots in Lohia village, Sameer currently resides in the Lal Kurti area of Meerut with his supportive family, including four siblings.
Sameer’s father, Haseen, shares insights into Sameer’s cricketing journey, noting that from an early age, his son displayed little interest in academics. Instead, Sameer found his mentor in his maternal uncle, Tankeeb Akhtar, who became his coach and guided him in the game.

Acknowledging Sameer’s dedication to cricket, his father reveals that education took a backseat, and Sameer, now 21, has been playing the sport for eight years. Despite not completing high school, Sameer has captained teams at the Under-14, Under-16, and Under-19 levels, surprising his family with the attention he garnered at the auction.

Reflecting on his journey, Sameer expresses gratitude to his father and family for unwavering support, admitting that his father used to accompany him to the field, providing encouragement and sustenance. Despite occasional scoldings about education, Sameer’s family has been his rock.
In Sameer’s own words, “He used to do the same, my father used to take me to the ground, used to bring food and take me back, my father used to support me a lot, the entire family supported me. There are ups and downs in cricket but there has been no special problem, sometimes I used to feel very sad when runs were not scored.”
With dreams of donning the Indian cricket team jersey, Sameer’s journey is a testament to hard work and familial support, inspiring aspiring cricketers to persevere and chase their dreams.
