Advocate Somasekhar Sundaresan, a prominent figure in the field of securities law, has been appointed as an additional judge of the Bombay High Court. This appointment comes after the Supreme Court Collegium reiterated its recommendation for Sundaresan’s elevation.

Sundaresan, known for his expertise in SEBI matters, was among the 22 senior lawyers recommended by the Bombay High Court for elevation. His extensive experience in securities law made him a strong candidate for the position.

Sundaresan’s legal career is marked by his association with J Sagar Associates in Mumbai, where he represented many high-profile corporate clients. He has also served on several government committees, including one focused on foreign investments. Interestingly, Sundaresan also has a background in journalism, having worked as a journalist from 1994 to 1998.

The Supreme Court Collegium first proposed Sundaresan’s name for the position of a Judge at the Bombay High Court on February 16, 2022. The Central government’s decision to appoint Sundaresan followed the Collegium’s reiteration of its initial proposal.

The Bombay High Court, which currently has 62 judges against a sanctioned strength of 94, is expected to benefit from Sundaresan’s vast experience in securities law. Members of the legal community have expressed their approval of Sundaresan’s appointment, anticipating that his specialized knowledge will enhance the court’s handling of commercial and equities related matters.
