Ajit Agarkar, the former Indian medium pacer is likely to become the new chief selector for the Board of Control for Cricket in India(BCCI). The position of the chief selector of BCCI has been vacant since the former chief Chetan Sharma resigned from his position due to his involvement in the controversial sting operation. Since the resignation of Chetan Sharma, Shiv Sundar Das, the former Indian cricketer has been acting as the intermediate chief selector.
The salary offered for the role of the chief selector was 1 crore which was not very attractive for the former Indian players as they earn more from the advertisements and commentary role, so BCCI has decided to hike the salary of the chief selector. The salary of the other members of the selection committee is 90 lakhs per annum.
Agarkar, a former Mumbai captain has played 26 tests, 4 T20, and 191 ODI matches for team India and he has been part of the 2007 T20 World Cup winning team under the captaincy of MS Dhoni.
Agarkar has been offered a hike in the salary from BCCI for the role of chief selector and the final decision of the chief selector will be taken during the Apex meeting council on 7 July 2023. In the past, Agarkar had applied for the same role in 2020 but he was not selected back then. Agarkar is the only well-known candidate on the list that has applied for the role and is most likely to become the chief selector. Agarkar has officially resigned from his position as an assistant coach for Delhi Capitals recently.
There is a certain criteria for the candidate to apply for the selection committee of BCCI. The candidate must have played at least 7 test matches or 30 First Class matches, 10 ODI matches, and 20 First Class matches. The candidate has to be under the age of 60 and has been retired 5 years or prior. The candidate is not eligible if he has served on any cricket committee for a period of five years.
