Goldenvoice, the Coachella festival’s producers, was penalised a total of $117,000 USD for violating the curfew during the opening weekend because shows lasted longer than permitted on each of the three nights.

The curfews were reportedly set for 1 a.m. on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, with all of the performances lasting longer than 20 minutes each night.

The current contract, according to officials, stipulates that staying out past curfew for five minutes will result in a $20,000 USD fee. After that, fines increase by $1,000 USD every minute. The money, according to reports, will go to Indio’s general fund, which supports the city’s public works, police, and fire services.

Frank Ocean’s highly anticipated headlining performance began an hour late, went 25 minutes over schedule, and had to finish the performance early by saying, “Guys, I’m being told it’s curfew, so that’s the end of the show.”

Insiders claim that Ocean injured his ankle and demanded alterations to the stage design, which included an ice rink at the start, at the last minute. The background dancers on stage were actually ice skaters and hockey players who had spent weeks perfecting their techniques.

It is not yet known if his Weekend 2 set will live up to the initial idea.
