In the opening match of the IPL 2023 against the Chennai Super Kings, Williamson suffered a leg injury while playing for the Gujarat Titans. He was later disqualified from the competition and sent back to New Zealand for additional knee scans. He now has a protracted recovery and rehabilitation period ahead of him.

Kane Williamson of New Zealand, will likely skip this year’s ODI World Cup in India since he needs surgery to heal a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, according to scan results.

Gary Stead, the head coach, hasn’t entirely ruled out Williamson for World Cup 2023, though.

“From our perspective, we certainly haven’t given up hope on that, and Kane will meet a number of milestones in the next six months or so,” he said.

“You take Kane the player, for a first start, but then Kane the leader and the person he is within our group as well, it’s a huge spanner in the works for us. Our first thoughts, obviously, are with Kane at the moment, it’s a tough time for him, it’s not an injury that you expect is going to happen, it comes out of the blue and it obviously hits you pretty hard at the time.”
