The prison, situated in the town of Rajo in southwestern Syria comprised more than 200o inmates out of which 1300 belonged to the Islamic State terror outfit. After the devastating earthquake, the inmates mutinied and 20 of them managed to escape.
Due to the destruction from the earthquakes, the prison walls and doors cracked up which aided in the easy escape of the prisoners. The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights war has not yet confirmed that the prisoners escaped but has confirmed that there was a mutiny.
Apart from t ISIS inmates, the prison also holds Kurdish-led fighter forces. This incident comes to light after December 2022, when the former de-facto Syrian capital of Raqa aimed to free jihadists from a prison there.
The Syrian conflict began in 2011, when peaceful protests were brutally repressed, which resulted in the involvement of foreign powers and jihadists from around the world.
The Syrian conflict has proven deadly for nearly half a million people and dragged half the forces of the country to a state of constant war. Several citizens have left the country for survival while others are always on a move to become refugees in neighboring countries like Turkey.
