The UN Security Council will vote on a resolution condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and calling for the withdrawal of all Russian soldiers on Friday. The council will vote at 3 p.m. EST on Friday.

The Biden administration is aware that Russia would veto the resolution but feels it is vital to put it to a vote to emphasise Russia’s worldwide isolation, according to a senior US official. The council’s pledge would be reaffirmed in the final document resolution. It said, “to the sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders.”

However, the resolution is bound to fail since Moscow has a veto in the 15-member UN Security Council.  According to some media reports, at least 11 members appear to be in favour. According to the official, the council vote would be followed by a resolution that will be voted on shortly in the 193-member United Nations General Assembly, which has no veto power.

Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla said on Thursday that India will hold off on adopting a position till the Security Council resolution on the Ukraine crisis is finalised. Shringla added that both on the ground and in the UN, the situation is changing constantly.

Since Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered special military operations against Ukraine, leaders from a number of countries have opposed the move, including the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, and the European Union.
