Music has the power to find its way into the secret places of the soul. It is that one language which is fathomable to all and sundry. We can find rhythm in absolutely everything. Today, i.e 21st June, is the day when we celebrate Music, and melomaniacs around the world appreciate its immense power and the impact that it has on their lives. But who can tell us better than a singer himself, what music is to him. So, in an exclusive interaction with a versatile person, who has tasted success in the acting field and charmed us with his soulful voice; Karan Oberoi, shares his thoughts on Music and his views on recent events.
Karan Oberoi who started his journey with Mahesh Bhatt’s famous ‘Swabhimaan’ and was part of one of the most successful boy bands called, ‘Band of Boys’, thinks that it’s good to recognize that there is music beyond boundaries. He says, “One interpretation we can have of World Music Day is that we are so immune to listening to what we create, but there is more out there, in our ecosystem. There is a lot of music; there is music in about everything in the world, so it is a good idea to celebrate music.”
Recently, Sonu Nigam made headlines when he voiced his opinions on how music industry is controlled by ‘Music-Mafias’ and when we asked Karan, whether he agrees with Sonu’s statement, he said, “It’s a fact that lives of many budding musicians is being ruined because of the absolute hegemony of two companies, they control it and they are the Mafia.”
He further stated that there is such beautiful talent around this country, that if explored properly, many superstars will come out. “When we are in a system, our lives are controlled by a man and we have that kind of system that has circulated in every state of the society. The two companies he is talking about, it’s absolute truth,” he added.
Taking this discussion further, he also talked about how it’s sad and unfortunate that some catastrophe has to happen for people to wake upto realities. He believes that nepotism has been promoted by the media than it’s promoted by the industry. He quipped, “How would I know some names like Taimur or Mahesh Bhatt’s daughter or Chunky Pandey’s daughter? It’s because someone out there is publicizing about it.”
Karan further expressed that just because some pieces are not worthy from a ‘Media perspective’, people with talent don’t get the desired attention. “It’s not just the music company, but it’s also the collective responsibility of the society to promote talent and give opportunity to people,” he adds.
Karan also shared that on the occasion of World Music Day, he will go live on A Band of Boys Instagram handle at 9 pm to engage in a few melodies for the people who follow and we cannot hold our excitement to listen to his beautiful voice.
Talking about his solo album, consisting of original tracks, he suggested that it is scheduled to release by the end of this year. In addition to this, treating his fans, he is coming up with an unplugged series called ‘Strings Attached with Karan’ which will have his favourite songs, which he adored and loved while growing. Talking about this, he said, “I am recording 25-30 songs and I am going to be voicing them this week, and shoot them subsequently. In a month or two, I can have a substantial number of songs and I cannot call them remixes because they are just voices on guitar, just unplugged of all the songs I loved, or listened to while growing up!”
Happy World Music Day to all the music lovers out there!
