The U.S.A is in the midst of a turmoil over George Floyd’s death caused by a white officer who took the law in his hand and murdered a black person on the basis of his colour. This heinous crime opened a lot of discussions over racial oppression, atrocities towards people of colour. Also, many white supremacists and other white people are now, looking at their behaviour and examining whether they have neglected the people of colour.

In this row, an infamous fashion watchdog Diet Prada exposed ‘double standards’ of fashion giants who have been called out for racism on multiple occasions. Though we have never thought of their negligence towards POC(people of colour) but now their acts are unwarping which were covered under the sheets.

The fashion watchdog threw light on the fashion biggie vogue and revealed some of the controversial covers from American’s Vogue history in which they have used people of colour as props. While sharing a well-researched post, Diet Prada captioned, “Condé Nast is under continued scrutiny for their internal behaviours towards Black employees, but there’s always been plenty of insensitivity right there on the surface.

Here’s some controversial moments from American Vogue’s history of cultural appropriation, using POC as props, and the glamorization of white privilege.”

Along with this, the post made us look through the insensitivity that has been done even with Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone as she appeared in the 2019 edition of Vogue with Kendall Jenner, Karlie Kloss, LeBron James, Scarlett Johansson, Irina Shayk. One such cover discussed on the post was the April 2019 issue. The post read, ‘In celebration of global talent, the issue championed “the new centre, which is everywhere and nowhere at once.” Despite Vogue’s intentions, it was glaringly obvious that in this new center, white women were still at its center. Actresses of colour like Adesua Etomi and Deepika Padukone were pushed to the side, serving more as props for white actresses like Scarlett Johansson and Venessa Kirby’.

Well if that is so, it is truly unfair on the part of fashion giants to portray white privileges in this way, and we are glad that this civil movement will work as a wake-up call for all the people out there!
