While addressing the occasion of World Youth Skills Day 2021 and marking the six-year completion of the Skill India Mission, Prime Minister Narendra Modi encouraged that learning should not stop with earning.
The Prime Minister further underscored that ‘Make India’ and ‘Atmanirbhar’ (self-reliant) through upskilling and reskilling should be the core focus.
Narendra Modi added, “We understood during the COVID 19 crisis that skill development is a key focus and every Indian must take it seriously.”
He further narrated that the government has facilitated adequate free skill training avenues for the youth under the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY).
The Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojna (PMKVY) is a flagship skill by the Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship (MSDE) initiated in the year 2015. The scheme is executed by National Skill Development Corporation.
The major aim of this skill certification scheme is to enable a wide number of Indian youth to gather industry-relevant skill training that will support them in securing a better livelihood. Individuals who possess prior learning experience or skills will also be evaluated and certified under the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).
According to a Moneycontrol report, PMKVY has trained nearly 1.28 crore youth in India, among whom 46 lakh are women. Under the placement linked program, over 56 percent of the total certified have been linked to employment.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated, “Those born in the 21st century will help India grow and develop further. Hence, skill development is a national requirement.”
Furthermore, he notified that the Skill India Mission should be given a new pace of growth. PMKVY is the flagship scheme under the Skill India Mission.
The Skill India Mission looks forward to training more than 40 crore individuals in India in various skills by 2022. The mission aims to provide vocational training and certification of Indian Youth for a better livelihood and respect in society.
PM Narendra Modi emphasized that Skill India will help India get skilled and walk at the same pace as the globe. He further notified that skilled persons in the areas relating to handicrafts, carpentry, gardeners, and potters are in high demand.
