A total of 12 ministers, including Ravi Shankar Prasad and Prakash Javadekar have resigned from the council of ministers, as a part of the Modi government’s first cabinet expansion. The resignations have been accepted by the President of India- Ramnath Kovind, as advised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The information was revealed in a press communique issued by President Ram Nath Kovind’s press secretary- Ajay Kumar Singh.
Prakash Javedekar was serving as the Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Minister of Information and Broadcasting, and the Minister of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises. He is a Rajya Sabha Member
Meanwhile, Ravi Shankar Prasad served as the Union Minister for Communications, Electronics & Information Technology under the Modi government. He also had the charge of the Union Law Ministry.
Under Prasad’s leadership, the new Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, governing social media intermediaries and digital media were formulated by the IT ministry. Prasad played a key part in the government’s battle against microblogging site Twitter, which has not yet implemented the provisions of the new IT rules.
Other ministers that will be resigning are- D.V. Sadananda Gowda, Thaawarchand Gehlot, Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’, Dr. Harsh Vardhan, Santosh Kumar Gangwar, Babul Supriyo, Sanjay Dhotre, Rattan Lal Kataria, Pratap Chandra Sarangi, and Sushri Debasree Chaudhuri.
