The carcass of one of the largest mammals of the aquatic land has been recovered from the waters off southern Italy. The whale was the “probably one of the largest” ever discovered within the Mediterranean, said the coastguard on Wednesday.

On Sunday, the dead mammal was seen in the sea near the popular destination of Sorrento by coastguard drivers who were first alerted to the presence of a smaller whale, which has since disappeared into the sea.

The coastguard stated that the lifeless whale’s carcass was recovered in a single day on Tuesday after which the whale was towed from Sorrento to the port of Naples. The victim’s place would be analysed and investigated by marine biologists and different consultants would take place to look out for the reason of the sudden demise.
