Wendy Sherman, the US Deputy Secretary of State revealed that the Biden administration would prefer India to leave the non-alignment G77 alliance with Vladimir Putin’s Russia. Wendy commented in response to Tim Burchett, a Congressman during a congressional meet up this week.

Tim Burchett questioned the US foreign policy with India amidst the ongoing Russia-Ukraine crisis, as Russia continues to trade with India and should this alliance affect the Indo-US partnership.

He said, “I am just asking whether India’s neutral stance towards Russia will impact our policy as in US policy with India?”

Wendy Sherman without hesitation responded to Tim’s question, stating, “Indo-US alliance is a very important one, great times are ahead for a defence trade with India. India is one of the largest and upcoming economies in the world and we have an amazing defence partnership with India. India is a part of the Quad including Japan and Australia. We have several projects in the pipeline with India to strengthen our Indo-Pacific corridor.”

She further added, “Like you (Tim Burchett) suggested we definitely want India to distance itself from Russia, alongside the G77 non-alignment.”

Wendy Sherman stated the US has increased its ties with India with regards to the sale of defence equipment and production and sales of the same will have a lot of opportunities to bank on with India for decades to come and that the US had a direct discussion with India on their immediate defence needs and that will be catered to despite their dependence on Russia.
