The US ambassador to China will reportedly step down early next month, ending a 3-year tenure marked by bitter relations between the world’s two largest economies.

Terry Branstad, appointed by the US President Donald Trump in 2017, conveyed his decision in a phone call with Trump last week, the U.S. Embassy said in a statement.

Branstad became embroiled in a recent controversy when China’s official People’s Daily newspaper rejected his opinion piece. Last year, Branstad traveled to Tibet Autonomous Region amid heightening trade tensions between the US and China.

Mr Branstad was the governor of Iowa when Donald Trump appointed him to the ambassador position.
