UN General Assembly suspends Russia from UNHRC, India abstains from voting

An emergency session of the UN General Assembly was called to vote on removing Russia from the UNHRC over its invasion in Ukraine.

On Thursday, April 7, United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) had suspended Russia from the United Nations Human Rights Council. An emergency session of the UN General Assembly was called to vote on removing Russia from the UNHRC over its invasion in Ukraine.

A total of 93 countries have voted in favour to remove Russia from UNHRC. 24 have voted against the draft resolution & 58 member counties including India gave abstained from voting.

India’s permanent representative to the UN, TS Tirumurti had condemned the killings in Bucha by Russian forces. “Recent reports of civilian killings in Bucha are deeply disturbing. We have unequivocally condemned these killings and support the call for an independent investigation,” said Tirumurti.

This is the second-ever suspension of a country from the council, Libya was the first to be removed in 2011.
