A Ukrainian drone attack targeted the Russian city of Kazan on Saturday, prompting the temporary closure of its airport, according to sources of Reuters. The attack involved three waves of drones between 7:40 a.m. and 9:20 a.m. local time, as confirmed by Russia’s Defence Ministry.
While no casualties were reported, the drone strikes caused damage to a residential complex, with unverified footage showing an aerial object crashing into a high-rise building and producing a large fireball. The mayor of Kazan announced the cancellation of all planned mass events in the city over the weekend and offered temporary accommodation for evacuees.
In response to the attack, the Russian aviation authority Rosaviatsia temporarily halted flights at Kazan airport and imposed restrictions at airports in Izhevsk and Saratov. The restrictions in Saratov were lifted later in the day.
The incident marks an escalation in the ongoing conflict, highlighting the reach of drone technology in modern warfare and its impact on civilian infrastructure. Kazan, located 500 miles east of Moscow, is among the latest urban centers to face the consequences of the conflict.
