U.S. President Donald Trump announced a major new trade agreement with the United Kingdom, calling it a “full and comprehensive” deal that will strengthen long-standing ties between the two nations.

Posting on Truth Social, Trump stated, “The agreement with the United Kingdom is a full and comprehensive one that will cement the relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom for many years to come.”

He emphasized the historical bond between the U.S. and UK, adding, “Because of our long-time history and allegiance together, it is a great honor to have the United Kingdom as our first trade agreement announcement. Many other deals, which are in serious stages of negotiation, to follow!”

Earlier in the day, Trump had hinted at the announcement, calling Thursday “a very big and exciting day” for both countries. A joint press conference was scheduled for 10 a.m. ET (1400 GMT) to provide more details about the U.S.-UK trade agreement.

The announcement comes at a time of growing uncertainty in global markets. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) recently downgraded economic growth forecasts for the U.S., China, and other major economies. The IMF cited the negative impact of U.S. tariffs and escalating trade tensions as key risks to global growth.

Meanwhile, U.S. and Chinese officials are preparing for critical trade talks in Switzerland this Saturday. These negotiations could represent a step toward resolving the ongoing U.S.-China trade conflict, which has disrupted supply chains and markets worldwide.

In recent weeks, Trump’s administration has engaged in a flurry of trade meetings following the April 2 imposition of a broad 10% tariff on imports. While reciprocal tariffs were later suspended for 90 days, global partners continue to push for permanent resolutions.
