The United States witnessed an eventful election in the COVID-19 crisis as voters swarmed in huge numbers at the voting centres and opted for the postal ballot, with a 60 percent voter turnout (around 100 million) out of the eligible voting population.

The Republican candidate Donald Trump faced off the Democrat candidate Joe Biden, one fighting to stay in power and the other preparing the ground to topple those in power.

Biden and his vice-presidential nominee Kamala Harris urged voters to step out through their active presence on Twitter. The candidates and parties enlisted reputed lawyers with links to Republican and Democratic associations to ready themselves in case of any urgency created by a narrow margin in a battleground, then the state becomes the factor to decide whether its power is vested with Trump or Biden administration.

Biden began his day by a solemn visit to his son’s grave, while Trump spent the election day calling people who have been loyal supporters and visit party headquarters to thank the staff.

The Wall Street stocks reflected a tense atmosphere with a rising graph as voters rushed to the polling centres. The broad-based S&P 500 gained 1.0 percent to 3,342.33, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index climbed 0.7 percent to 11,035.54.

As the global political leaders stand with bated breaths in anticipation of the results, American citizens are exhausted from the constant crises, a huge spike in COVID-19 deaths, environmental crises and volatile political divisions.
