Retail sales in the United Kingdom increased in August for the fourth consecutive month, indicating that British consumers continued to support the economic recovery through the summer.
The volume of retail sales in Great Britain rose 0.8% in the month of August compared with the previous month, data from the Office for National Statistics showed.
“Retail sales continued to grow, further surpassing their pre-pandemic level,” said Jonathan Athow, deputy ONS national statistician for economic statistics.
However, the senior official noted that clothing stores continued to struggle, with sales still well below the pre-pandemic level. In other words, the switch to online sales means the high street remains under pressure.
