U.S. and China Reach Major Trade Deal in Geneva, Confirms White House

In a significant diplomatic development, the United States and China have struck a substantial trade agreement during high-level talks held in Geneva, the White House confirmed in a press release issued on May 11, 2025.

Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent stated that the two-day negotiations were highly productive, attributing part of the success to the Swiss government for hosting the discussions. “We made substantial progress,” Bessent noted, adding that President Trump had been fully briefed and a complete update will be issued tomorrow morning.

The U.S. delegation included Vice Premier and two vice ministers from China, along with U.S. Trade Representative Ambassador Jamieson Greer, who echoed the sentiment of successful talks. Greer said, “It’s important to understand how quickly we were able to come to agreement… perhaps the differences were not so large as maybe thought.”

He emphasized that the trade deal aims to address the massive $1.2 trillion U.S. trade deficit, which had previously prompted President Trump to declare a national emergency and impose tariffs. The agreement, officials say, marks a path toward resolving that economic crisis.

Further details of the deal are expected to be shared in a dedicated briefing on May 12.
