United States President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he will be traveling to the Middle East “fairly soon”, following the recent Gaza peace agreement between Israel and Hamas.
Speaking during a cabinet meeting, Trump said he “won’t be spending that much time” there as he will be “leaving fairly soon.” Calling the development a “great thing” for the country, he said, “People are so happy about it. I’ve never seen such universal praise for it. We’re going to end up having peace in the Middle East. Who would have thought so?”
Earlier, the Israeli President’s Office confirmed that Trump is expected to arrive in Jerusalem on Sunday, with local media reporting that his itinerary includes ceremonies at Ben Gurion Airport and a visit to the Western Wall.
The visit comes after the announcement of the first phase of Trump’s Gaza peace plan, which includes hostage and prisoner releases, and has been met with cautious optimism from global leaders.
