The Chinese Ministry of Commerce on Monday strongly criticized United States President Donald Trump’s proposal that NATO members impose 50% to 100% tariffs on China. The suggested measure is aimed at pressuring Beijing to cut its purchases of Russian oil, with Trump stating that the duties would be lifted once the war in Ukraine ends.

Calling the proposal a “classic example of unilateral bullying and economic coercion,” the ministry warned that such tariffs could deal a severe blow to global trade and disrupt international production and supply chains.

China urged the US to resolve differences through dialogue and cooperation instead of unilateral pressure. It further stressed that Beijing would take “all necessary measures” to safeguard its rights and interests if Washington or NATO countries move ahead with the plan.

The statement underscores rising tensions in global trade policy as the West attempts to curb Russia’s war funding through sanctions and restrictions, while China continues to be one of Moscow’s key buyers of oil.
