In what looks like a spree, Twitter froze the Twitter handle of the Chinese Embassy to the United States of America on January 21st after it posted an offensive tweet which insulted the Chinese Uighur Community.
This disciplinary action was taken after the Chinese Embassy’s Twitter handle, @ChineseEmbinUS, posted a tweet on January 7th which stated that Uighur women were no longer “baby-making machines,” citing an article reported by party-supported newspaper China Daily.
The tweet was struck by Twitter and in place of the tweet a label appeared stating that the tweet was “no longer available.” Although Twitter hides tweets that violate its policies, it requires account owners to manually delete such posts.
Twitter said the tweet violated its policy that banned ‘dehumanization’. A spokesperson from Twitter stated, “We’ve taken action on the Tweet you referenced for violating our policy against dehumanization, where it states: We prohibit the dehumanization of a group of people based on their religion, caste, age, disability, serious disease, national origin, race, or ethnicity.”
Just on the previous day, the Trump Administration, on its last day, had condemned China’s genocide of the minority group in Xinjiang.
China has constantly dismissed all accusations of the genocide of the Uighurs in its Xinjiang region, where a United Nations panel had recently stated that at least 1 million Uighurs and other Muslims had been detained by China.
This action from Twitter comes a week after it had taken similar disciplinary action on the account of former US President Donald Trump, citing the risk of violence after his supporters stormed the US Capitol this month.
