One of the most influential women in Silicon Valley and a close friend of Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Sandberg announced in June that she would leave the social media giant after 14 years, during which time she oversaw the business model that was frequently criticised and relied heavily on advertising.

2018 allegations that UK firm Cambridge Analytica had inappropriately obtained data on millions of its U.S. users to target election advertising buffeted the corporation under Sandberg.

According to U.N. human rights investigators, Facebook’s use was crucial in spreading hate speech that stoked violence against the Rohingya people in Myanmar that same year.

The Facebook owner announced in a regulatory filing that Sandberg will stop working for the company after September 30 but continue to serve on its board.

In the past, Meta has spent a lot of money protecting its top executives. According to information released in April, the company spent $26.8 million on Zuckerberg’s personal security and private plane in the previous year.
