As Russia intensified its military attack in Ukraine, China on Tuesday announced that Moscow’s “legitimate security demands” ought to be taken remarkably and properly addressed for a political settlement to settle the Ukrainian crisis.

Declining to criticise Russia’s military activity, which has arrived at a definitive phase with thousands of Russian troops flocked on the outskirts of Ukraine’s capital Kyiv, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin asked for a “political settlement that accommodates both sides’ legitimate security interests, achieves public security in Europe and improves Europe’s lasting peace and stability”.

Inquired to elaborate, Wang told: “China thinks that the security of one nation should not arrive at the expense of the security of other nations, still less should regional safety be ensured by strengthening or even broadening military blocs”. Wang let out the Cold War mentality should be removed entirely.

“The Cold War mentality should be removed fully. The valid security concerns of all nations should be honoured. Given NATO’s five consecutive rounds of eastward growth, Russia’s legitimate security urges ought to be taken seriously and properly expressed,” he announced.

On the mounting fatalities in Ukraine as an outcome of Russia’s offensive, Wang told that the Ukraine issue has complex historical context and rational components.

“The Chinese side excuses the casualties. The recent problem is not what we want to see. The top preference is for all groups to exercise necessary restraint to curb the situation on the ground in Ukraine from worsening or even spiralling out of control,” he announced.

“The life and property security of civilians should be effectively ensured, and in particular, large-scale humanitarian problems should be avoided,” Wang expanded. On the US and EU sanctions against Russia, Wang replied that sanctions are not a helpful solution to figure out problems.

“It is China’s constant stance that we reject all illegal unilateral consents. China and Russia will proceed to carry out normal trade cooperation pursuing the spirit of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit,” he announced.

Meanwhile, China on Tuesday began the emergency evacuation of its over 6,000 students from Ukraine. “At present, Chinese residents in Ukraine are leading to neighbouring countries of Ukraine in several ways”, Wang told. About 1,000 Chinese citizens in Ukraine have by far safely relocated, he announced.
