According to a report by AFP, Russia declared that it would prohibit flights from 36 nations, including the United Kingdom and Germany.
Moscow’s declaration came as Russian aeroplanes were barred from entering the airspace of the great majority of European countries, as well as Canada. Jersey, a UK dependency, and Gibraltar, a British overseas territory, are among the countries on its list.
Russia’s civil aviation authority stated that the restrictions were imposed “as a retaliatory measure for the ban by European states on flights by civil aviation operated by Russian airlines or registered in Russia”.
Airlines will be authorized to fly inside Russian airspace only with special authorization. Russia blacklisted UK airlines last week, following Britain’s embargo on Aeroflot, the country’s main carrier, as well as private planes.
The European Union said on Sunday that Russian aircraft, especially private planes, will be barred from using its airspace. Because of these precautions, airlines may have to take extended diversions on some flights, potentially hiking ticket prices.
