Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral service took place on Saturday, April 17, 2021, at St. George’s Chapel where it was carried in a specially designed Land Rover. The vehicle was accompanied by the members of the Royal family, who joined the funeral cavalcade on foot, with cousin Peter Philips in between Princes Harry and William.

The Duke of Edinburgh has been entombed in the Royal Vault of St George’s Chapel. The arrangements for the funeral were made keeping in mind COVID-protocols, and members of the family were asked not to attend any of the funeral affairs.

The members of the Royal family gathered in Windsor, England, for the funeral of Prince Philip, who died at the age of 99 on April 9, 2021. Prince Philip’s funeral was a conventional royal funeral and not a state funeral. The Duke of Edinburgh’s coffin was draped in his 12ft personal standard and adorned with a garland of flowers chosen by the Queen.

The service was led by a Royal Procession from Windsor Castle and a nationwide minute of silence. Prince Philip helped to design a specially modified Land Rover for over 16 years. It acted as the vehicle for his coffin.

The events that took place on 17th April, as of 8:25 PM IST, are as follows:

  • The Royal Family leaves St George’s Chapel. They are accompanied by the Dean of Windsor and the Archbishop of Canterbury.
  • The Duke of Edinburgh has been interred in the Royal Vault of St George’s Chapel. He was buried along with his Admiral of the Fleet Naval Cap and sword. The Queen was seen sitting alone, mourning the death of the Duke of Edinburgh.
  • The coffin is then placed inside the chapel and then, the Royal Family take their places. As the coffin is placed on the catafalque inside St George’s Chapel, the choir starts singing.
  • The Queen shortly arrived at St George’s Chapel, where she was greeted by the Dean of Windsor, the Right Reverend, David Conner. A minute of national silence is then observed to remember the Duke. Prince Philip’s coffin is now taken inside the chapel and the funeral services began shortly after.
  • The duke’s coffin then begins its journey towards St George’s Chapel, where the funeral service was held. The Queen arrives at Windsor Castle and the Royal Family then follows the procession. The Grenadier Guardsmen carried the coffin and placed it inside the Land Rover.
  • As the funeral began, military bands played music selected by the Duke of Edinburgh, including Jerusalem and Elgar’s Nimrod. Prince Philip’s specially-modified Land Rover arrived at Windsor Castle and acted as his hearse.

Prince Philip’s funeral was broadcast across national TV, radio and online channels in the UK. The funeral was also accessible through the Royal Family’s official YouTube channel. 

On Saturday, April 17, The Buckingham Palace unveiled the list of 30 guests who were allowed for the congregation at the funeral service of the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip.

The Queen and Philip’s eldest son, Prince Charles were seen walking in the procession with other members of the Royal Family behind a specially-modified Land Rover, bearing Philip’s coffin through the castle grounds. Prince William with his wife Kate and Prince Harry also joined the procession. Meanwhile, Harry’s wife Meghan, who is pregnant, has stayed behind in the United States.
