Lebanese Deputy Prime Minister Tarek Mitri has defended the government’s decision to engage in negotiations with Israel, stating that the move was aimed at preventing a prolonged and devastating conflict, as tensions continue along the southern border.

“WE RESORTED TO NEGOTIATING WITH ISRAEL TO AVOID A PROLONGED WAR,” Mitri said, underlining the government’s strategic choice amid ongoing hostilities. His remarks come as the region witnesses continued clashes despite a recently extended ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon.

Mitri further emphasised the internal political backing for the negotiations, stating, “THE GOVERNMENT’S DECISIONS AND THE PRESIDENT’S SPEECH ARE THE ELEMENT OF STRENGTH IN THE NEGOTIATIONS.” He indicated that Lebanon’s official stance is being shaped through coordinated institutional efforts, reflecting both executive decisions and presidential direction.

At the same time, he made clear Lebanon’s position on territorial and sovereignty issues, asserting, “LEBANON IS NOT PREPARED TO ACCEPT THE OCCUPATION.” The statement comes amid continued Israeli military activity in parts of southern Lebanon and ongoing disputes over security arrangements along the border.

Recent reports indicate that the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah remains fragile, with violations reported from both sides. Hezbollah has dismissed the truce as ineffective, citing continued Israeli strikes, while Israel maintains that its actions are necessary for self-defense.

The United States has played a central role in mediating the situation, with President Donald Trump announcing a three-week extension of the ceasefire following diplomatic engagements involving Israeli and Lebanese representatives.

Despite these efforts, the ground situation remains volatile, with continued exchanges of fire and political divisions within Lebanon over how to handle negotiations with Israel. Hezbollah has opposed direct talks, further complicating the government’s diplomatic approach.

Mitri’s remarks reflect Lebanon’s attempt to balance military realities with diplomatic engagement, as authorities seek to prevent escalation while maintaining national sovereignty and internal political stability.
