Japan’s newly-elected Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga is likely to meet US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in Tokyo early next month, public broadcaster NHK said on Saturday.

It would be the first high-level meeting between the two allies since Suga, 71, became leader this week to replace Shinzo Abe, who announced last month that he planned to step down owing to ill health.

Mr Mike is expected to visit the Japanese capital for talks with foreign ministers from Japan, Australia and India, NHK said.

They are expected to discuss cooperation on the ongoing crisis triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, Suga might also speak with U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday, Japanese media said.
