Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei Kani said on Monday that Tehran and Washington continue to exchange messages through mediators, but stressed that formal dialogue between the two sides is not currently feasible.
Speaking at a press briefing, Baghaei noted that negotiations with the United States will only take place if Washington “respects the rights and interests of the Iranian nation.” He emphasized that Iran “cannot be required to give up its legitimate rights” as part of any future talks.
The spokesperson also reaffirmed Tehran’s commitment to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), saying Iran’s cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is aligned with “legal procedures and national security decisions.”
His remarks come as tensions remain high between the two countries over sanctions, nuclear activity and regional security issues.
