An Iranian missile and drone attack on Prince Sultan Airbase in Saudi Arabia has damaged multiple aerial refueling tankers, according to US and Saudi officials speaking to the Wall Street Journal.

This marks a significant increase in Iran’s attacks on military sites in the region. The attack struck one of the most important American military locations in the Middle East. Prince Sultan Airbase, located about 80 kilometers southeast of Riyadh, serves as a key hub for US air operations in the area and hosts a large number of American military personnel and equipment. The aerial refueling tankers based there are essential for supporting long-range combat and surveillance missions over Iran and nearby regions.

This strike is a planned Iranian effort to weaken US air offensive and logistical capabilities at their source. By specifically targeting refueling assets, Tehran aims to diminish the operational endurance of US and Israeli air campaigns. Aircraft conducting long-range strikes on Iran rely heavily on mid-air refueling to reach their targets and return safely. The extent of the damage and the number of tankers affected have not been fully revealed by US or Saudi officials. Initial reports did not provide details on any casualties.

Saudi Arabia has tried to maintain a neutral stance since the start of the US-Israel war with Iran, but it now faces increasing pressure as Iranian attacks on its territory rise. Earlier in the conflict, Iran targeted Saudi energy infrastructure, leading Riyadh to say its trust in Tehran is “completely shattered.” The attack on Prince Sultan Airbase is likely to provoke a strong response from Washington. The Pentagon is already under pressure to safeguard its regional assets as the conflict continues into its second month with no ceasefire in sight.
